Subcultures and Me!

As I learn more about subcultures and their defintions, I realize that I myself am a member of a number of subcultures at Ohio University.
  • Ohio University History Association
    • This is a social club, where students of all majors are united by one singular love of history!
      • Our rituals include: Satiric historical re-enactments, character dinners, group socials, and individual presentations
      • Insider phrases include: OUHA (oh-yoo-ha) and "The battle of Ev-Kev!"
      • Behaviors: Our behavior can be contrasted between our formal meetings, which seem more like historical seminars and our informal meetings that range from meetings in restaurants to gatherings at my house!
  • Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor's Society
    • This is an academic honor's fraternity. It can be contrasted with the informality and openness of OUHA. It is limited by a GPA and history hours requirement.
      • The rituals include: Brown bag lunches, movie nights, trips, and the induction ceremony
      • Insider phrases include: PAT and inductees, inductors.
      • Behaviors: This is a formal, academic organization with strict behavioral limits. At meetings, there is almost little to no informal conversation. Group members rarely make eye contact with one another; even if close friends, the conversation is restricted to soft whispers.
  • Triple of Awesomeness (TOA)
    • This group is composed of the residents of 82 1/2 West Union Street. It is composed of three members, of which I am one.
      • Our rituals include: Bi-weekly roomie nights, a reunion dinner at O'Bettys, and an unhealthy addiction to t-shirt making.
      • Insider phrases include: A drink called the wrong whole, TOA which stands for Triple of Awesomeness, and the love triangle.
      • Behaviors include: gossiping, movie-watching, hosting and attending parties as a group, and communal celebrations of academic of professional success!
