Denise Duhamel Reaction

Her poetry is interesting. The rhythmic pattern differentiates her style from the style of other contemporary poets. The poem I found most interesting is titled "The Man Who Likes to Have His Back Scratched". I would chose to withold why this poem is the most interesting to me. Yet, the brevity of the lines are memorable to the very last. I wonder why the author elects to be so. . . the word prurient springs to mind but I am afraid the connotation of the word is too negative. Sometimes the poetry reminds me of a conversation with a sixth grade boy. The more times they say "naughty" words the more grown up they are. However, my final conclusion on the work as a whole is that she takes on topics of an inherently personal nature. Regardless of the ethical issues she encounters in her work, rather than view her work as taboo, I have elected to declare that it works to break our concept of the taboo.

  1. I like how her work takes old tales and modernizes them...I feel like she is doing the culture a great honor by putting their stories into a format (poetry) that is engaging for audiences today.
